When will Sonic open in Grand Forks?

Sonic plans to open its Grand Forks restaurant by the end of the month, depending on if it can fill the 100-plus positions needed to operate it.

Construction is on schedule for the drive-in restaurant at 1800 S. Washington St., Sonic developer Abe Sakak said. The fast food chain broke ground in April at the former Ponderosa restaurant. That structure was demolished to make way for the Sonic restaurant and drive-in area.

The only contingency to opening by Aug. 31 would be hiring, Sakak said. Sonic previously announced it planned to hire 110 employees and four full-time managers. Job listings include crew members, cooks, carhops and assistant managers.

The franchise has advertised the job openings with various means, including on social media. The interview process has gone well and 14 employees are being trained for positions in Grand Forks, Sakak said.

He should know later this month if it will be able to open by the end of the month. Those interested in applying should go to www.hmijobs.com.
